
Applying mehndi is a part of different cultures and it is applied on different events. Applying henna is popular in South-Asia, Middle East and africa. In muslims mehndi is usually applied on eids, weddings and other celebrations. In hindues mehnid is applied on weddding and on ther festivels as Karva Chouth, diwali, Bhaidooj and teej. Mehndi is a way of celebrating so it is an important part of different events.
Weddings:
Applying mehndi is an important part of weddings, both for Muslims and Non-Muslims. In South Asia (India and Pakistan) there is a specially organized function called “mehnid”. In this function the bride and her friends get together and apply mehndi. They, sometimes also sing some songs to make the function more alive and interesting.
Eids (Eid-ul-fitr, eid-ul-adha):
Two Eids are celebrated by Muslims every year, Eid-ul-fitr and Eid-ul-adha. In both of these occasions Muslims get together pray and then celebrate. For women mehndi is an important part of Eid. They apply mehndi on the evening before eid which is sometimes called “Chand raat”.
After fasting in the month of “Ramadan”, eid-ul-fitr is celebrated on the first of “Shawal”. Eid-ul-Adha is celebrated on 10th of zil-haj.
Karva Chouth:
Karva chouth is a festival celebrated by Hindus and some Sikhs once a year. It is celebrated on 4th day after full moon in the Hindus month of Kartik in North India and in some Parts of Pakistan. In this festival, married women observe a day long fast. It starts from sunrise and ends at moonrise. Women don’t eat anything and sometimes don’t even drink water. They fast and pray for the safety and long life of their husbands. They usually don’t do any house hold task that day. They prepare things for puja. Applying cosmetics and henna is also the part of this festival.
Diwali:
Diwali, also known as “festivals of lights” is celebrated by Hindus, Jainas and Sikhs. It is a five day long festival. In this festival, people clean their houses and decorate them with lamps and lights. Women wear new clothes and jewelry and decorate their hands with henna/mehndi.
Bhaidooj:
Bhaidooj is a one day festival, celebrated by Hindus on the last day of five day long diwali festival. On this festival, sisters invite their brothers for a meal and serve their favorite dishes. This whole ceremony is about brothers and sisters.
Teej:
Teej is a fasting festival for women celebrated by hindus. It is a three days long festival and usually falls in the middle of august or in early September.
